Sorority gives back to community

As part of their philanthropy the sorority Sigma Kappa has been making weekly visits to the local nursing home. Sigma Kappa raises money nationally for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Members of the sorority travel to Gowin Parc in Mattoon to spend time with the patients. Gowan Parc is a nursing home dedicated to those suffering with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Weekly visits to nursing homes and other related organizations are common throughout sororities. Many sororities require a certain amount of volunteer hours to give back to the community.

According to the Sigma Kappa webstie 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s today. Members volunteer and raise money to help find a cure.

With that many people affected by the disease it is heartwarming to know that something is being done to help. Even if it is something as simple as weekly nursing home visits.
