With the departure of Detroit from the division and the Vancouver Canucks seen as a non factor this year, Chicago’s newest rivalry could spring up just 297 miles south on I-57.
According to Mark Lazerus, a Chicago Sun-Times staff reporter, the rivalry could start as early as Wednesday’s game.
The Blues are seen as the biggest threat to the Blackhawk’s in their quest to repeat their title, especially with their late season additions of two of the top defenders in the NHL, Jay Bouwmeester and Jordan Leopold.
Lazerus called the teams geographically close but stylistically far apart.
Chicago brings their immense depth and high powered offense, contrasted with the big and bulky Saint Louis defense that has allowed just two goals this season.
The match up could spark an intense rivalry down the road, especially with divisional games mattering much more this year because of the divisional playoff system.
