BET Hip Hop Awards Cyphers and Performance Recap

Were there any awards given? I was too focused on the cyphers and performances to even remember. However here’s my take on this years BET Hip Hop Awards.

130

Top Dawg Entertainment also known as TDE, is killing the game. Their cypher which featured Schoolboy Q, J Rock, new member Isaiah Rashad, my favorite Ab-Soul and of course Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick, who originally wasn’t going to do a cypher, stole the cypher as everyone was trying to decipher who was he referring to.

“Nothing’s been the same since they dropped ‘Control’/ And tucked a sensitive rapper back in his pajama clothes,”

Many assumed that he was talking about Drake but the rapper said it was all fun and not directed towards anyone in particular, or so he says. I think J Rock was the underdog of this cypher, he delivered great bars that I didn’t notice until I watched the performance a second time. The rappers delivered their rhymes over the Havoc created beat for Mob Deeps hit song “Shook Ones”. Overall it was one of my favorite cyphers of the awards show and I want a high five from Kendrick too!

A$AP Mob featuring Rocky, Ferg, Twelvy, Nast, and Ant had a old school NY cypher. Which was interesting to see because the members of this crew were all young and were able to channel old school greats in this cypher. Lil Kim came out of hiding for a cameo in a cypher that featured Action Bronson, Travi$ Scott and friends.

Not a punchline was missed when the Slaughterhouse cypher came on. Shady, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9 and Joe Budden put together a strong cypher that had a lot of people talking. Crooked I being my favorite of the cypher he gave us a tough rhyme that really out shined the rest of the crew. Joe Budden however didn’t perform like the rest of Slaughterhouse. Something about his delivery that just didn’t do it for me. They rapped over a simple hip hop beat that could of been better.

Then we had the comedic cypher from the stars of the BET show The Real Husbands Of Hollywood. Which was my second favorite cypher, just because, well its Kevin Hart! No one could resist a laugh when these men started performing. Boris Kodjoe, born in Germany, spit the first part of his cypher in German. Duane Martin had a solid cypher who also went back to his NY roots. This cypher was just pure comedy!

Then there performances. I was overwhelmed with lyrics from the Cyphers so the performances were to hype up the crowds and get everyone out of their seats.

French Montana, Rick Ross, Diddy and Snoop Dogg performed together at this years award show. 2 Chainz also performed with old school greats Juvenile and Mannie Fresh!

Closing out the show was one of the greatest Hip Hop groups of all time reliving their classics. From “1st Of The Month” to “Crossroads” the group brought everyone back to a good time in the Hip Hop world.

It was a solid award show however next year I’m hoping something amazing happens, something that we will talk about forever, a new historic moment needs to happen.
