A man is running in between the tall, rustic remains of New York city desperately to escape. Dodging, weaving as he goes it is evident that the man could only run in this fashion if he was being hunted.A hunter up ahead sees him, the man retrieves their shield and cuts off the hunter’s head with it. Just then the rest of the hunters catch up to the man, “Why Magneto? Why put yourself through all this?” Another remarks,”It seems thou dost not know when thou art defeated.”
The Man clad in red and purple armor, with a dome like helmet and magnetism emanating from his entire body turns to stand. The hunters are revealed to be the fallen heroes of the Marvel Universe, all of them now members of a new group, the undead.
Magneto, The Last Mutant yells, “I think it’s safe to say you idiots underestimated me! What made you think I was an easy target?! I’m the Master of Magnetism and we’re surrounded by steel and concrete! I’ll outlive you all! Did you really think you could defeat me?!”
Just then the wasp comes from behind biting Magneto in the neck. Ant-Man replies, “Yeah, I thought it was a pretty safe bet.”
This is how I was first introduced to Marvel Zombies and man there is nothing more awesome than envisioning Magneto:
taking Captain America’s shield and decapitating him:
Basically a superhero or villain falls out of the sky smack dab in the middle of New York in one of the many alternate worlds of the Marvel Universe. The body, upon inspection has carried a zombie virus with the potential to wipe out all life on earth. So, (like literally any zombie movie, book, fiction, literature, etc.) no one thinks to kill the specimen first and in their foolishness they get bitten, and down goes the planet.
It is at this juncture, that four separate, but equal plots emerge within this Robert Kirkman (Of Walking Dead fame) fueled zombie genocide. But much like a Quentin Tarantino film are seen in a nonlinear storyline, leading to several of the events being seen or heard, literally “off-panel”.
1. Everyone teams up. Heroes. Villains. X-Men. Avengers. Tony Stark (Iron Man), Bruce Banner (Hulk), and Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) are tasked with curing the zombie virus or eliminating all of them with a super science solution. Stark builds a dimensional transporter reasoning that they’ll never inhabit the world in which they once lived as reconstruction of society could take as long as 100 years. Richards upon examining the undead sees them as an evolutionary step in Humanity’s struggle for existence and in turn zombifies himself and the Fantastic Four team.
2. Magneto, observing all of this in Asteroid M with the Brotherhood of Mutants selflessly decides to join the X-Men in their fight reasoning there’s no mutant rights to fight for if there are no more mutants. Following Magneto’s death, the Brotherhood come down to earth and find the Black Panther and the zombified head of Janet Van Dyne. Together they rebuild the earth in New Wakanda somewhere in the ruins of Africa.
3. In the Ultimate Marvel Universe, The Fantastic Four (still in their early to mid 20s) are seen as part of Professor Storm’s research and development lab in the Baxter Building. Without having complete autonomy Reed wonders what it would be like to be a superhero all the time for altruistic purposes. The Zombified Fantastic Four (henceforth referred to as the Frightful Four) broadcast to Young Reed’s world a pleasant utopia giving Reed the instructions to teleport to their world, so they can use the teleport to eat everyone in the Ultimate universe and catalog more universes on the other side. At one point, the help of Dr. Doom is enlisted… I won’t say more than that, except Doom is an amazing character.
4. The heroes of villains of the first alternate earth eat everyone on the planet effectively crushing any kind of resistance until the unthinkable happens, the Silver Surfer shows up as, herald of Galactus. The zombies then intend to devour the Surfer before realizing their bodies aren’t hard enough including wolverine’s adamantium claws to break the skin. Tony Stark comes to the rescue blasting the Silver Surfer with the the Iron Man suit and the six zombies left to eat the remains of the Surfer (Stark, Spiderman, Hulk, Luke Cage, Giant Man, and Wolverine) giving them the powers cosmic to use in a confrontation with Galactus.
